 'Usual table, M’sieur.  Madame joining you?'

 ‘Thanks, Armand,’ the distinguished-looking man nodded, and was seated.  In due course he rose to greet his guest. Armand fussed around pulling out the chair, pouring wine, and taking orders.

 Later another diner whispered, ‘He’s alone; why the pretence…?’

 Armand shrugged. ‘He cannot accept she died last year.’
